CNC Bylaws

To promote science-based best management practices for crop nutrients that enhances both the economic and environmental sustainability of agriculture.

Objectives:

Contribute to public education and rural development.
The Crop Nutrients Council will coordinate communication to agriculture industry on the economic and environmental benefits of the use of best management practices in the application of crop nutrients.
The Crop Nutrients Council will coordinate communication to the public about the application of environmentally sound crop nutrient practices in the production of food.
In providing communication as above the crop nutrients council will do so through cooperation with industry and other stakeholders in the crop nutrients supply chain.
Promote the voluntary adoption of best management practices for crop nutrients that are environmentally and economically sustainable.
Foster communication and cooperation with federal and provincial governments and municipalities in support of mission statement.
Encourage research in support of science-based crop nutrient best management practices.  

Membership

The membership of the Crop Nutrients Council will be national in scope, representing a range of stakeholders which support the Council mission statement and its goals.  Membership will be in three categories.

Members
  • Corporations, government agencies and associations that support the council mission statement and its goals. Memberships shall be approved by council executive. Each member will designate one individual to as their representative on the Council. Alternates will be allowed. 
Affiliates
  • Organizations that support the council mission statement and its goals may participate in Council activities as affiliates. Affiliates shall be approved by the Council executive.
Associates
  • Individuals with particular knowledge or expertise related to crop nutrients (i.e. P.Ag, Cetified Crop Advisers, researchers, etc.) who support the Council mission statement and its goals may participate in Council activities as individuals. Associates shall be approved by the Council executive.
Governance

The activities of the Crop Nutrients Council will be governed by an executive selected by the members. The executive will consist of three members from farm groups and three from the fertilizer industry. One of the executive members will serve as the chair. Duties and responsibilities will be designated by the members as required.

Executive meetings will be held by conference call or in person on a quarterly basis.
There shall be at least one annual meeting of members each year. This may be held by conference call or in person. The executive will set date and time. 

Administration

The Crop Nutrients Council will be headquartered in Ottawa. The Canadian Fertilizer Institute will provide office and administrative support and serve as the secretariat for the Council. There will be no charge for these services.

The Crop Nutrients Council will have a part-time executive director provided at full cost by CFI.  At the direction of the executive, the executive director will implement the activities outlined above. Where feasible, Council services and documents produced by the Council will be available in both official languages.

While the Crop Nutrients Council would be coordinated through the office of the Canadian Fertilizer Institute, it will remain a separate and distinct entity by maintaining separate financial records. All funds will be used specifically for the activities of the Council.

CFI will provide annually its level of commitment for the following year.

A budget and financial statement will be presented to the members annually for approval.

Budget

The operation of the council will be financed by:
  • Levies approved by the members on a voluntary participation basis
  • Grants from government and other funding agencies
  • Fees for service (subscriptions, publication fees, meeting fees)
  • Goods and services in kind provided by members and affiliates
There will be no direct fee for members, affiliates or associates.
