There is always a lot to talk about regarding soil fertility and if you’re planning an event on the topic, here are some tools to help you. You can order them directly from the people who developed them.

 

Kit on Fertilizer For Maximum Yields

Back-to-Basics offers an educational kit and web-based resources aimed to teach growers and those who influence their fertilizer management decisions about the critical importance of proper soil fertility. The kit includes materials dedicated to the message of narrowing the yield gap, as well as an assortment of other materials from the Potash & Phosphate Institute.

Efficient Fertilizer Use Manual
Back to Basics offers an Efficient Fertilizer Use (EFU) Manual on CD-ROM. The EFU is a comprehensive book about proper fertilizer uses, soil pH, soil sampling, and much more and can be used as a reference manual or as a training guide.


Fertile Minds ProAction Kit

Meant to “arm the industry” the Fertile Minds ProAction Kit is visually appealing and easy to use. From letters to the editor to presentation materials there is a tool for virtually any audience. Divided into sections for meeting with: area leaders, media, schools, friends and family. It makes talking about soil fertility a snap.

Fertile Minds Video
Fertile Minds offers a video with “streeter” interview highlighting the gaps in public knowledge, followed by live taping of forums of leading experts on fertilizer use and effects.

Sustainable Development Video
From the Ground Up is an agricultural education resource for high school students. The ½ hour video and accompanying teacher’s guide presents the concept of sustainable development and how it relates to soil depletion and degradation, the debate over the use of chemical solutions, the dependence on non-renewable resources to grow our food, and the health of the farm economy and the way consumers influence agricultural practices. Each topic can be discussed as a separate lesson.

Nutrients Glossary
Available on CD-ROM in four languages, Fertilizer Terms is a glossary full of fertilizer terms and expressions included mainly on the basis of their importance in the field of fertilizer usage, with a few relating to soil science, fertilizer manufacture and analysis, application machinery and methods.

NH3 Safety Videos
The Government of Saskatchewan has compiled a series of videos all on the topic of farm safety, including one directly related to anhydrous ammonia use and handling safety.

School Kit
The Canadian Fertilizer Institute has developed a School Lunch Box Kit for Ag in the Classroom, an educational tool designed to teach schoolchildren about the value of soil fertility and how it relates to their everyday lives. For more information, contact CFI at 613-230-2600 or fertilizer@cfi.ca.
